The First Opium War (1838-42) was won by Britain, and China had to accept opium in payment for its resources. The treaty that ended the first war was so harsh that China rebelled again, fighting the British and the French in the Second Opium War (1856-58). Again China was defeated and forced to accept payment in opium.
