and Y = the higher integer

Since they are integers (numbers that are next to each other), we know that

Y = X + 1

We also know from the question that

Y = 9 + 2X

We can now sub in info from the first equation into the second equation:

X + 1 = 9 + 2X

and now solve for X:

1 - 9 = 2X - X

-8 = X

Now solve for Y

Y = -8 + 1

Y = -7
