A restaurant had n kg of sugar in its stock. Then, 5 3/5 kg sugar was used to make the first dessert on the menu. Next, 3 1/2 kg sugar was used to make the second dessert on the menu. Write an expression to show how many kilograms of sugar were left in the stock, and then simplify the expression.

Answer:

n-(9(1)/(10))

Explanation:

Let

n------> the total kg of sugar in stock

x-----> the kg of sugar left in stock

we know that

x=n-(5(3)/(5) +3(1)/(2))

Convert mixed number to an improper fractions

so

5(3)/(5)=(5*5+3)/(5)=(28)/(5)

3(1)/(2)=(3*2+1)/(2)=(7)/(2)

substitute

x=n-((28)/(5) +(7)/(2))

x=n-((28*2+7*5)/(10))

x=n-((91)/(10))

convert to mixed number

x=n-(9(1)/(10))
