y = 4

Explanation:

You can do this either with the unit circle or the sine function (if you know it).

Method One

Sin(30) = opposite / hypotenuse Definition

  • opposite = y
  • hypotenuse = 8
  • Sin(30) = 1/2

1/2= y/8 Multiply both sides by 8

1*8/2 = y

y = 4

Method two

The unit circle will tell you that sin(30) = 1/2

1/2 = y/8

Done the same way as above

y = 4
