Last week, the drama club at Kennedy High School put on an original play titled North to Freedom. This noteworthy production focuses on a young woman's odyssey from slavery to freedom by way of the Underground Railroad.
Read this excerpt that the author of the play North to Freedom used to learn about the life of slaves who traveled along the Underground Railroad from a Web site.
Life for escaped slaves using the Underground Railroad was often dangerous and strenuous. Many of the slaves who escaped and traveled to Canada or safer Northern states were young men who could better handle the difficult journey. Also, the trip was more difficult for slaves who lived in the Deep South, as they had further to travel. Some of escaped slaves had guides, called conductors, who led them to safe houses. At the safe houses, called stations, many escaped slaves could find food and a warm place to sleep. When they did not stay in stations, however, escaped slaves had to find their own food and shelter.
Which statement presents an OPPOSING view from the excerpt?
A) Slaves who lived in states closer to the North had easier journeys.
B) The stations along the Underground Railroad provided food and safety.
C) Escaped slaves often had to fend for themselves, but sometimes had help.
D) An equal number of men and women traveled along the Underground Railroad.
