Explanation:

We have been given the compound inequality

y -2 < -5 or y -2 > 5

Since 2 is in subtraction with y hence in order to eliminate it we can do the reverse operation of subtraction which is addition.

Hence, add 2 to both sides

y -2+2 < -5+2 or y -2+2 > 5+2

y < -3 or y > 7

In interval notation, we have


y\in(-\infty ,-3)\cup(7,\infty )
