Stage directions help the actors and audience physically move in the space (to move the action forward). They help give meaning to the characters because we learn about them. They help develop the plot in a logical way that if a specific action does not occur, the rest of the play could not happen.

Stage directions are instructions written into the script of a play, indicating stage actions, movements of performers, or production requirements (the art or technique of a stage director).
