Two corresponding sides of two similar triangles are 3cm and 5cm. The area of the first triangle is 12cm^2. What is the area of the second triangle?

33 1/3 = Area of the large

Explanation:

The scale factor between the small and large triangle is 3:5 or 3/5

When we go from side length to area, the scale factor becomes squared

(3/5) ^2 = 9/25

Using proportions

area of small 9

-------------------- = ----------------

area of large 25

We know the area of the small is 12

12 9

-------------------- = ----------------

area of large 25

Using cross products

12*25 = 9* area of large

Divide each side by 9

12*25/9 = 9/9* area of large

33 1/3 = Area of the large
