To find the whole area, we want to first find the area of each shape we see. The square has dementions 4 by 4, so the area is 16. The triangle has dementions 6 by 8. the area of a traingle is 1/2 the base (3) times the heigth (8) which is 24. Next we add the two numbers... 24+16=40
