This refers to "A Wrinkle in Time", published in 1962 by Madeleine L'Engle.
They begin communicating with the man with the red eyes, who presents a kind and gentle voice until Meg realizes that he is "inserting" words in their minds. Whilst the man has a seductive and convincing tone ( tempting them that they should give into him and let him take away all their “burdens of thought and decision"), the other characters are aggressive and reluctant, Charles Wallace yells not to look into his eyes or they would “hypnotize you”. The aggression is even noted by Meg once Charles threatens to kick the man.
