In Gabi, a girl in pieces, Gabi Hernandez writes her journal both in English and Spanish. This reveals her struggle to live with her roots, her "mexicanness", she has trouble to adapt to a place were she sometimes feels like a stranger. A journal lets us be ourselves so the use of both languajes lets us see a character that accepts her own contradictions and makes them part of her personality.
In her las year of high school she tries to make her own decisions, start her own life. She has to chose to confront her family in some points of view or follow the traditions. Gabi then deals with a lot of choises to make and a space full of multiculturalism.
