If you interpret the question as is, the answer is in the thousands which is not listed. The last part of the question should read “the number of new cases doubled from those newly identified cases from the day prior.” It was poorly phrased lol
Day 1: 5
Day 2: 5+10
Day 3: 15+20
Day 4: 35+40
Day 5: 75+80
Day 6: 155+160
Which is 315 at the end of the 6th day

Answer: (D) 504

Explanation:

The sum a geometric sequence is:
S_n=(a_1(1-r^n))/(1-r)\ \text{where}\ a_1\ \text{is the first term and r is the ratio}

In the given problem,
a_1=8 and r = 2

S_6=(8(1-2^6))/(1-2)\\\\\\.\quad=(8(1-64))/(-1)\\\\\\.\quad=-8(-63)\\\\.\quad=504
