During the era of Jim Crow, an African-American male in any of the deep South states (Georgia, South Carolina, Mississippi, etc.) would have responded to Jim Crow laws negatively.
Jim Crow laws were laws that legally segregated white and black citizens within a state. This resulted in the creation of seperate schools, parks, water fountains, movie theaters, etc. In this case, African-American men in the South would be particularly mad since they were supposed to receive the same protections under the law thanks to the passing of the 14th amendment. However, the end of federal government regulation of the South in 1877 showed that Reconstruction was going to be a failure in the eyes of African American citizens. These citizens were not going to be able to express their newly received rights in the South.
