An atom is made up of electron, proton and neutron

In case of neutral atom there must be the same number of electron and proton as the neutral atom don't carry any charge.

In an atom, Proton bears positive charge while electron bears negative charge and the neutron don't have any cahrge on it.

It shows that there must be equal number of proton and electron to make an atom, otherwise it will show some charge.
