The best word to describe these works would be progressive.

There was a noted change of focus after the war, with works hovering over more artistic and social problems rather than political. The postwar literature may have no been the richest one, but revealed a lot of great authors with a high number of excellent critics and novels. Some authors who should be noted are F. R. Leavis, Iris Murdoch and C. P. Snow.
