we know that


1\ dime=\$0.10


1\ quarter=\$0.25

Let

x-----> the number of dimes

y------> the number of quarters

we know that


0.10x+0.25y=5.40 -----> equation A


x+y=30 ----Isolate the variable y


y=30-x -----> equation B

Substitute equation B in equation A


0.10x+0.25(30-x)=5.40


0.10x+7.5-0.25x=5.40


0.25x-0.10x=7.5-5.40


0.15x=2.1


x=14\ dimes

Find the value of y


y=30-x


y=30-14=16\ quarters

therefore


16 is the number of quarters and
14 is the number of dimes
