Use the discriminant to determine the number of real solutions to the quadratic equation.

- 4y^2 – 9y - 3 = 0
What is the number of real solutions?

So the discriminant is 9^2 - 4*(-4)*(-3) which is equal to 33

Now the solutions are:

y = (9 - √33)/(-8) and y = (9 + √33)/(-8)

Answer:

2 real solutions

Explanation:

D = b²-4ac

If D = 0 then 1 real solution

if D > 0 2 real solutions

if D < 0 no real solutions

a = -4

b = -9

c = -3

D = 81 - 48

D = 33

2 real solutions
