Explanation:

According to the midsegment theorem,

HG = ½(QS)

Thus:

21 + 2x = ½(2x + 24)

Multiply both sides by 2

2(21 + 2x) = 2x + 24

42 + 4x = 2x + 24

Collect like terms

42 - 24 = 2x - 4x

-18 = -2x

Divide both sides by -2

9 = x

x = 9
